What’s Next for the Data Market in 2025?
It’s always interesting looking back at a year and observing what has changed. We’re in a space where things are continuously shifting, where it feels like every day we take another step forward, and I’m sure 2025 is likely to bring the same.
As we step into the new year, the data market is set for even more growth, fuelled by cutting-edge technology, shifting business priorities, and a demand for actionable insights. Drawing on insights from 2024 studies, industry reports, and thought leadership -including trends highlighted in Gartner’s data analytics predictions and talks from industry leaders at TED and other forums - here’s what I believe we can expect in the year ahead:
1. Generative AI Moves from Experimentation to Execution
Generative AI dominated the tech conversation in 2024. In 2025, we’ll see organisations move beyond pilot programmes to integrate AI into their operations at scale. This shift will drive demand for:
• Data Engineers to design and maintain scalable data pipelines.
• Machine Learning Engineers adept at fine-tuning and deploying generative AI models.
• Ethical AI Specialists to ensure responsible AI use, addressing regulatory and societal concerns. (This is another conversation to be had – how do we truly ensure responsible AI use?)
2. Real-Time Data Processing Becomes Business-Critical
The need for instant decision-making will make real-time analytics indispensable. People who are proficient in tools such as Apache Kafka and Apache Flink, as well as real-time databases, will be highly sought after.
3. Data Governance Rises in Importance
With increasing regulations and heightened privacy concerns, robust data governance frameworks will take centre stage. Professionals with expertise in:
• Data privacy laws like GDPR and CCPA.
• Data cataloguing and lineage tools.
• Data stewardship to oversee compliance and best practices will be in high demand.
Whilst this has always been important, it’ll be even more front & centre.
4. Edge Computing and IoT Create Decentralised Ecosystems
The rise of IoT devices and the adoption of edge computing will push organisations to manage decentralised data ecosystems. This will open doors for those skilled in:
• Edge analytics tools.
• Secure data transmission protocols.
• Managing distributed architectures.
5. Data Democratisation Becomes a Strategic Goal
Companies will continue to invest in self-service analytics platforms, enabling employees across departments to access and interpret data. The role of data professionals will expand to include:
• Training non-technical teams in using BI tools like Power BI and Tableau.
• Advocating for data literacy across organisations.
6. ‘Data Storytellers’ Play a Pivotal Role
As businesses seek to convert raw data into actionable insights, the demand for strong data storytelling will grow. Analysts who combine technical expertise with storytelling and domain knowledge will be invaluable.
How Can You Stay Ahead in 2025?
• Upskill Continuously: Learn cloud platforms like AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud. Master programming languages such as Python, SQL, and Scala
• Certifications Matter: Invest in certifications for data science, machine learning, and tools like Snowflake or Databricks.
• Develop Soft Skills: Communication, collaboration, and storytelling will help you stand out in cross-functional teams.
2025 promises to be a transformative year for the data industry. As companies double down on leveraging data for competitive advantage, opportunities for skilled professionals will only grow.
I’m excited to be a part of this space as we enter 2025, and I can’t wait to see the advancements that are made.
